Hollywood wanted his screenplay. Sylvester Stallone wanted the leading role. With little money and no guarantee of another opportunity, the struggling actor refused to surrender the character he believed he was born to play. Now, "I Play Rocky" brings that gamble to the screen, revealing the personal battles behind one of cinema's most enduring underdog stories.

Directed by Academy Award winner Peter Farrelly, the Amazon MGM film stars Anthony Ippolito as Stallone, P.J. Byrne as producer Irwin Winkler and Toby Kebbell as fellow producer Robert Chartoff. Written by Peter Gamble, the drama follows the rejection, financial hardship and determination that preceded the success of the 1976 classic.

For Byrne, the story raises a question familiar to anyone who has pursued an uncertain calling: how much are you willing to risk before anyone else sees what you see?

Speaking with The Christian Post, Byrne pointed to Stallone's decision to turn down substantial offers for his screenplay unless he could portray Rocky Balboa himself. The money could have eased his immediate struggles. Accepting it, however, would have meant watching another actor take the role he had written for himself.

The film follows that conflict alongside Stallone's marriage to his first wife, Sasha, and his troubled relationship with his father. As professional disappointment presses against personal responsibility, his insistence on playing Rocky becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.

Winkler and Chartoff eventually recognise something in that persistence worth backing. Their decision gives the film another source of drama: producers must put their own reputations and resources behind an actor the industry has yet to embrace.

Byrne connected that relationship to his own experience. Before becoming an actor, he was preparing for a career on Wall Street. Encouragement from a college professor helped him consider acting, although someone else's confidence could only carry him so far. He still had to make the decision himself.

He also spoke about faith and the lasting influence of people who believe in us, reflecting on his late father and the encouragement he continues to draw from their relationship.

"Amazing things can happen when you have faith. Truly," Byrne told The Christian Post.

The cast also includes Jay Duplass as "Rocky" director John G. Avildsen, alongside AnnaSophia Robb, Matt Dillon, Tracy Letts and Stephan James.

The original "Rocky" went on to receive 10 Academy Award nominations and win three Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. "I Play Rocky" returns to the years before those honours, when its future depended on difficult conversations, personal sacrifice and a handful of people willing to take a chance.

"I Play Rocky" opens in select theaters November 6, followed by a wider theatrical release later in November.
