The search for University of Alabama student Jimmy Gracey ended Thursday in Barcelona - not with the reunion his family prayed for, but with the recovery of his body from the waters near Port Olímpic marina.
Gracey, 20, had been missing since the early hours of March 17 after leaving the Shoko nightclub on Barceloneta beach and never returning to his Airbnb.
Where his body was found
Catalan police dive teams recovered Gracey's remains from Port Olímpic, a marina located just steps from the nightclub where he was last seen alive. The discovery came after a multi-day search that included helicopters, boats, dive teams, and motorcycle units working across the Barceloneta shoreline.
Earlier Thursday, Gracey's wallet was found floating in the sea near the same area. His body was recovered shortly after. Divers reported that visibility underwater was severely limited - at times less than 16 inches.
A spokesperson for the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan regional police, confirmed the remains were identified as belonging to Gracey.
Was Jimmy Gracey murdered?
That is the question thousands of people are searching right now - and the answer, based on current police information, points away from foul play.
While earlier in the investigation authorities had flagged surveillance footage appearing to show Gracey leaving Shoko with an unidentified person, police now appear to be leaning toward an accidental death. Reports from Spanish publication La Vanguardia, citing police sources, indicate that foul play has likely been ruled out. The current working theory is that Gracey may have fallen into the water in the hours after leaving the nightclub.
An autopsy has not yet been completed. No cause of death has been officially confirmed.
His family's statement
The Gracey family confirmed their son's death Thursday in a statement that was both heartbreaking and measured.
"Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy's body has been recovered in Barcelona," the family said. "Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss."
They also expressed gratitude toward local authorities and the U.S. Consulate for their assistance throughout the search, while asking the public to respect their need for privacy as they process their grief.
"We have made the decision to pause media interviews at this time to focus on being together and caring for one another," the family added.
Gracey's father, Taras, had already traveled to Barcelona during the search and was notified by police of the discovery.
What's still unknown
The full circumstances of Jimmy Gracey's final hours remain under investigation. Gracey's phone - recovered earlier in the week during the arrest of a separate individual - had its location data reviewed as part of the case. Surveillance footage from the night is still part of the ongoing inquiry. The autopsy will be the next major development that could shed light on exactly how he died.
For those following the case and holding the Gracey family in prayer, that answer is still ahead. What is not in question is the loss itself - a 20-year-old from Elmhurst, Illinois, remembered by those who knew him as a fraternity chaplain, a big brother to four siblings, and someone who made a point of showing up for others.
That kind of life leaves a mark that no autopsy report can measure.
JubileeCast will continue to update this story as official findings become available.
