GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter and Bethel Music president Jenn Johnson is stepping into one of the most candid seasons of her public ministry yet, addressing concerns surrounding Bethel Church and its leadership while also releasing her deeply personal new single, "Mad At God," available today on all streaming platforms.
In a recent interview with ChurchLeaders, Johnson responded to questions about Bethel Church's culture, theology, and recent controversies, acknowledging the challenges that come with being part of a large and imperfect ministry while expressing confidence in its leadership. She described Bethel as "big and messy" but said its leaders are "trustworthy people" who are seeking to shepherd well and pursue healthy correction over time.
That transparency forms a fitting backdrop for "Mad At God," a song that tenderly explores the tension between pain and faith. The track offers a compassionate voice for listeners wrestling with grief, disappointment, and unanswered questions, while ultimately pointing to the nearness of God in the middle of sorrow.
"I wrote this song in the midst of the pain and heartache of losing my mother-in-law," says Johnson. "In the middle of the hurt-and the questions we may never have answers to-it's okay to tell Him when we're mad, when we don't understand, and to let His love wash over us."
"Mad At God" is the latest preview from Johnson's debut solo album, HAPPY, due out May 22. Fans can listen to the song, watch the official music video, and pre-save the album now.
The upcoming project showcases a more personal side of Johnson's artistry, blending worship with country flair and pop influences. Previously released singles from the album include "Here In Your Arms" featuring Brian Johnson and "Walk With Me" featuring Tiffany Hudson. The 12-track collection will also feature guest appearances from Brooke Ligertwood, Kari Jobe, Abbie Gamboa, Gable Price, and others.
