When Cody Johnson dedicated his first-ever ACM Entertainer of the Year award to Luke Combs last Sunday in Las Vegas, most people assumed it was simply a gesture of professional admiration. It was much more than that.
After the show, Johnson sat down with Billboard Country and told the full story - one that started in an arena bathroom in Australia in 2023.
Johnson was on tour opening for Combs when he noticed something was wrong. He went looking for his friend and found him alone, completely broken. "He was in the bathroom of an arena just so defeated, sobbing," Johnson recalled. "I walked in, I'm like, 'What's going on? Who died?' He said, 'My son was born tonight.'"
Combs had been thousands of miles from home - performing a sold-out show - when his wife gave birth. He had hoped to make it back in time. He didn't.
Johnson, a father himself, knew there were no perfect words. But he didn't stay silent either. "I literally said, 'You're doing something now that is going to create a legacy for your family for a very, very long time. I'm sorry you weren't there. There's nothing you can do about it. You shouldn't feel bad about it. I'm sorry it happened this way, but you know, I'm proud of you.'"
Combs later described that night to the Zane Lowe Show as "one of the best and one of the worst days in my life at the same time."
What happened the following night stayed with Johnson just as much. "The next night, I watched him walk out onstage, absolutely kill the show," Johnson said. "It was a moment where I had a new-gained respect for Luke."
That respect carried all the way to the ACM stage four days ago. "So tonight, I want to dedicate my first Entertainer of the Year award to my buddy Luke Combs. I love you, brother. Thank you," Johnson told the crowd.
It is the kind of friendship that doesn't make headlines often - one built in hard, private moments rather than red carpets. And it is worth noting. Proverbs 17:17 says it plainly: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity."
