Journey keyboardist and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jonathan Cain has released "The Winds of Freedom: A Salute to America," a new patriotic anthem commemorating the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary. The single debuted on July 3 through The Fuel Music and is now available on major digital and streaming platforms.
Written as a celebration of America's semiquincentennial, Cain said the song is both a tribute to the country's history and an expression of gratitude to God.
"I'm 76-years-old and I get to experience this, and me being a patriot, I wanted to frame it musically with a praise song to God," Cain shared.
While traveling on Journey's "Final Frontier Tour 2026," Cain briefly stepped away from the road on Memorial Day to record the lead vocals in Nashville before rejoining the band the following day in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the U.S. Constitution.
Inspired in part by Eric Metaxas' book REVOLUTION: The Birth of the Greatest Nation in the History of the World, Cain said he wanted to tell the story of America's journey to freedom while recognizing the influence of faith throughout the nation's history.
"I wanted to joyfully celebrate, in a musical way, just how incredible it is that we are a free nation," Cain said. "At the end of the single, I sing, 'The winds of Freedom still calling our name.' It's up to us now to continue to fly the flag on the winds of freedom."
The veteran songwriter first recorded a demo backstage before a Journey concert in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After receiving enthusiastic encouragement from a retired Marine working event security, Cain moved forward with producing the song.
The release follows Cain's Only A Prayer Away EP, which arrived earlier this year and reflects his ongoing focus on faith-centered music. He is currently touring with Journey on the band's "Final Frontier Tour 2026," which extends into 2027. Cain has announced these tours will serve as his farewell with the legendary rock group before transitioning into full-time ministry alongside his wife, Paula Cain, at City of Destiny in Apopka, Florida, where she serves as pastor.
Best known for co-writing iconic Journey classics including "Don't Stop Believin'," "Faithfully," "Open Arms," and "Who's Crying Now," Cain has also released numerous solo worship projects over the past decade, blending his celebrated songwriting career with his Christian faith.
"The Winds of Freedom: A Salute to America" is available now on streaming services. More information about Jonathan Cain, his music, books, and tour schedule can be found at jonathancain.org.
As America prepares to mark 250 years of independence, Cain's new anthem points listeners beyond national celebration to the One who is the ultimate source of freedom.
As Galatians 5:1 reminds believers, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." Christians are called not only to cherish earthly liberty but also to live in the lasting freedom found through Christ.
