Ryan Gosling is heading to a galaxy far, far away - and new details are finally coming into focus for "Star Wars: Starfighter," the actor's first venture into the franchise.
Gosling plays Kade Auberon, described by director Shawn Levy as a "cynical rogue" from "the wrong side of the galaxy" whose fate becomes tied to the fastest starfighter ship ever built. "Kade is a guy from the wrong side of the galaxy, whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built," Gosling said while unveiling footage at Disney's D23 fan event.
The story follows Kade as he teams up with a young newcomer, played by Flynn Gray, after uncovering a decommissioned Imperial ship in a spacecraft garage. Their journey unfolds roughly five years after "The Rise of Skywalker," making it the furthest point in the timeline any "Star Wars" film has explored. Levy has been clear that the movie stands entirely on its own. "This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It's a new adventure," he said.
The film's cast also includes Mia Goth, reportedly playing a villain pursuing Kade and his young companion, alongside Matt Smith, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman and Daniel Ings. Kathleen Kennedy produces alongside Levy, from a script by Jonathan Tropper.
Levy has also said the film's score won't recycle John Williams' classic themes, giving this corner of the galaxy its own musical identity.
"Star Wars: Starfighter" is scheduled to hit theaters May 28, 2027 - arriving as Gosling closes out a banner year that also included the space-survival hit "Project Hail Mary."
