Miles Caton may have found fame playing "Preacher Boy" in Sinners, but the rising actor and singer just reminded America that his extraordinary voice existed long before Hollywood came calling.
Caton stepped onto one of sport's biggest stages before the US Open men's singles final on Sunday, delivering a soulful rendition of "America the Beautiful" inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. With Grammy-winning producer Adam Blackstone arranging the performance, Caton resisted turning the patriotic standard into a vocal circus. Instead, he used his rich tone, gospel phrasing and carefully controlled power to make the familiar song sound deeply personal.
The performance quickly attracted praise online, with viewers celebrating Caton's distinctive delivery. It was another high-profile triumph for a young performer whose career has moved remarkably quickly from the church world to movie screens, awards ceremonies and now the US Open.
Caton became a breakout star through his feature-film debut as Sammie "Preacher Boy" Moore in Ryan Coogler's Sinners. His performance earned him the Critics Choice Award for Best Young Actor and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture. Yet his commanding US Open appearance proved that acting is only part of his story.
Music runs through Caton's family. He is the son of gospel singer and preacher Timiney Figueroa-Caton, whose powerful vocals are familiar to gospel audiences through her work with artists such as Hezekiah Walker. His aunt, Anaysha Figueroa-Cooper, is also a respected gospel vocalist. Raised in a church-centered musical family, Caton reportedly began singing when he was only two years old.
Before Sinners, he had already appeared on NBC's Little Big Shots, performed with gospel legend Yolanda Adams and toured with Grammy winner H.E.R. That background explains why his US Open performance felt less like an actor trying his hand at singing and more like a seasoned vocalist comfortably taking control of another enormous room.
Caton is also making sure his music career does not disappear behind his Hollywood success. On August 21, he released his latest single, "Lean On," through Columbia Records. The R&B and soul track places his textured voice over layered harmonies, atmospheric production and a heavy bass line, offering another glimpse of the solo artist emerging beyond "Preacher Boy."
In an entertainment industry that often asks young performers to choose one lane, Caton appears determined to keep several open. He can act alongside Michael B. Jordan, perform on the Academy Awards stage, release contemporary R&B and still let the gospel foundation of his voice shine through "America the Beautiful."
His mother helped nurture the gift in church. Hollywood introduced it to millions. Now the US Open has given Caton another stage-and once again, the young star walked away with people talking.
