Machine Gun Kelly is opening up about a health scare most fans never saw coming - and it started with a tattoo.
In a June 8, 2026 interview with Billboard Canada, the 36-year-old musician revealed he experienced a medical emergency after getting his dramatic blackout tattoo completed in just a matter of weeks, despite serious warnings against it.
Instead of following the advice of celebrity tattoo artist ROXX - who recommended spreading the process over two years - MGK pushed through the full blackout design in just two months, covering most of his arms, chest, and stomach in ink.
The consequences were immediate and alarming.
"After the first week, we hit my lymph nodes around my armpits and shoulders, and I got really sick," MGK said. "My skin was turning yellow. I wasn't able to sleep. I stopped being able to move certain parts of my upper body."
MGK documented parts of his recovery on social media at the time, sharing footage that included blood dripping during tattoo sessions and images of himself recovering in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.
But despite the physical toll, MGK said the experience ultimately left him feeling inspired - not just because of what he had done, but because of what he had to overcome.
"The same way I was reinventing my sound, I wanted to reinvent my body," he explained.
MGK had reflected on looking in the mirror and no longer recognizing himself - his older tattoos reminding him of phases of his life he no longer wanted to carry. The blackout design was his way of starting over, visually and spiritually.
MGK was raised by Christian missionary parents, and while he operates in mainstream hip-hop and pop-punk, his journey through pain, transformation, and what he describes as coming out "the other side" echoes a story many in the faith community understand deeply - that sometimes the most profound renewal requires walking through something difficult first.
