There's something refreshingly genuine about Sammy Listoe. Long before he was writing country rock anthems in California, the Montana native was racing motocross, working alongside his father, and learning the values of grit and perseverance that continue to shape both his music and his life.
Now balancing a career as a touring artist and a firefighter, Listoe brings real-life experience to every song he writes. His latest single, "Shotgun Famous," captures the nostalgia of young love, inspired by the early days of dating the woman who would become his wife. In this exclusive interview, Listoe reflects on his journey from Montana to California, the memories behind the song, working with acclaimed producers Jim Cooley and Andrew Mendelson, how serving as a firefighter has transformed his songwriting, and what fans can expect next.

Q: For readers who may be discovering your music for the first time, how would you describe your journey from growing up in Montana to becoming a country rock artist based in California?
It truly has been a long and challenging journey, but an incredibly blessed one. Growing up in Montana was an amazing experience. I spent much of my childhood racing motocross, visiting my grandma's ranch, and working alongside my dad in his business. Those experiences taught me the value of grit, perseverance, and hard work.
Music was always a part of my life, especially through my mom's side of the family, who are incredibly talented musicians. I played a few instruments and sang, but music wasn't always my main focus. When I was about 14, my family moved to California with the goal of pursuing motocross, and I was fortunate enough to have some success in that world.
Eventually, music took over. At 21 years old, I fully committed myself to songwriting and performing. For the past 14 years, I've been writing music and playing shows all over the world. Now, I'm surrounded by an incredible group of musicians in my band, and we're excited to release several new songs this year.
Q: "Shotgun Famous" was inspired by your early days with your wife. What memories from that season of life found their way into the song?
A lot of the inspiration came from those early nights of getting to know her-picking her up for dates, driving around, listening to music, and watching her sing along from the passenger seat. Those simple moments left a lasting impression on me.
There are also elements of the song that were created to build a sense of imagery and nostalgia that weren't necessarily part of our exact story, but she was absolutely the muse behind the song.
Q: The track celebrates the simple moments of young love-windows down, music up, and nowhere particular to be. Why do you think those memories resonate so strongly with listeners?
I think most people can relate to those early moments of a relationship-cruising around in a car, playing your favorite songs, and just enjoying being together. There's something simple but powerful about those experiences.
You learn so much about someone during those moments, and sharing music together creates a connection that can be incredibly meaningful.
Q: You worked with Jim Cooley and Andrew Mendelson on "Shotgun Famous." What did they bring to the song that helped elevate it from an idea to a finished recording?
They are true professionals and have worked on several hit records, so bringing them in to put the finishing touches on the song was an easy decision.
I've always believed that a great mix and master can transform a song from simply being music into a complete experience. They helped bring the vision of the song to life and took it to another level.
Q: In addition to being a musician, you serve as a firefighter. How has that experience shaped your perspective on life, songwriting, and connecting with audiences?
In one word: gratitude. Having the honor of serving as a firefighter has given me incredible perspective on what truly matters in life. It's shown me how fragile and beautiful life is, and that every day should be appreciated and never taken for granted.
Those experiences have shaped me as a person and have also deepened my songwriting by giving me a greater understanding of people, emotions, and the moments that matter most.
Q: Looking ahead, what can fans expect from you in terms of new music, touring, and the next chapter of your career?
I'm in such a cool and blessed season of life right now. My faith continues to grow and remains the most important part of my life because it helps me become the best father and husband I can be. I believe those are my greatest responsibilities.
From that foundation, I've found even more passion and purpose, which continues to fuel my songwriting and performing. I'm excited to release new music this year, play new venues, meet new people, and continue building this journey with my band.
I'm truly grateful for the opportunity, the support, and everyone who has been part of this story along the way.
