NBC has quietly rolled out sweeping new security measures at the "Today" show's Studio 1A, following two separate incidents that left staff on edge for much of the year - including the ongoing, unsolved disappearance of co-anchor Savannah Guthrie's mother.
According to Page Six, the network installed multiple new layers of security around the "Today" operation at 30 Rockefeller Center after a disturbing incident on July 16, when a 41-year-old man, identified as Andrew Truelove, allegedly bypassed guards and entered an unauthorized vestibule near the studio. Reports say Truelove had been looking for weatherman Al Roker but instead encountered co-anchor Craig Melvin, whom he allegedly confronted with a racial slur before being stopped by security. Truelove now faces hate crime charges, including felony burglary and misdemeanor menacing.
An internal memo obtained by Variety outlined some of the changes, including a new rule limiting guests to just two accompanying support staff, such as stylists or publicists.
Staff reportedly welcomed the changes without pushback. "It's a relief," one insider told Page Six. "It was much-needed and took longer than people would have liked, but it does feel a lot better now."
The overhaul comes as the show continues to carry the weight of a second, far more painful crisis: the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, Savannah's 84-year-old mother, who was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1 and remains missing more than seven months later. Through it all, Savannah and her family have continued to lean publicly on prayer, asking supporters to keep believing Nancy will be found.
