Apple TV's horror-comedy "Widow's Bay" made history at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday night, closing the ceremony with a record-breaking 14 total wins - the most any comedy series has ever earned in a single year.
The series, created by Katie Dippold, took home the night's final and biggest prize, Outstanding Comedy Series, capping a haul that included eight wins at the earlier Creative Arts Emmys and six more during the main telecast. The show's total surpassed the previous record set by "The Studio," which collected 13 trophies the year before, and before that, "The Bear" with 11 in 2024.
Lead actor Matthew Rhys won twice in one night - once for "Widow's Bay" and again for Lead Actor in a Limited Series for "The Beast in Me" - while first-time nominees Kate O'Flynn and Stephen Root also picked up acting wins for the show. Director Hiro Murai became the first Asian person to win Directing in a Comedy Series, and Dippold herself won for writing, marking her first-ever Emmy nomination and win.
Accepting the top award, Dippold first thanked her mom "for always making Halloween fun" before crediting "the wonderful weirdos and artists" who worked on the show, along with Apple TV for backing its unusual premise.
"Widow's Bay," about a New England island town gripped by a supposed generations-old curse, premiered in April 2026 and has already been renewed for a second season.
In his own acceptance speech, Rhys reflected that storytelling is what allows people to understand and appreciate one another - a reminder that even a show built around fictional darkness can carry a very real, and very biblical, truth: stories have always been one of the ways we make sense of each other and the world.
