Matt Damon has revealed that his wife, Luciana Barroso, underwent brain surgery for an aneurysm one week before the 2024 Academy Awards. The actor shared the story in GQ's Men of the Year cover interview, published Thursday, Nov. 5.
Damon, 56, said Barroso is "totally fine, thank God" and described the episode as a scary one. He did not say whether the aneurysm ruptured or share further details about the surgery.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a brain aneurysm is a weakened area in an artery wall that bulges outward. Some cause no symptoms, while others can rupture.
Despite the surgery days earlier, Barroso surprised her husband by getting dressed up and joining him at an Oscars after-party celebrating Oppenheimer, which won seven awards that night, including best picture. Damon said it was the first night she felt well enough to get up and had her energy back.
He explained that she remembered he missed the 2007 Oscars, when The Departed won best picture, because he was working on The Bourne Ultimatum. This time, she insisted they go out. Damon called the gesture heroic and deeply meaningful.
